I was blown away. The Galactic Empire is well underway into the predicted total collapse. However, what those starting conditions might be I do not know, nor am I sure that those conditions can be found by any one person—or by any number of people—in a finite length ciclp time. Eventually, Trevize discovers Earth, but it, again, contains no satisfactory answers for him it is also long-since deserted.

Foundation’s Edge mentions algae growing on Trantor, which is called a totally inadequate source of food, so it is possible some of the later Emperors attempted to yrantor the situation with limited success. To repair the damage the Mule inflicts, the Second Foundation deploys a plan which turns upon individual reactions.

So it was really a bummer to see The Mule’s story being rounded off in a meek fashion in the first part of the story. At the same time, a vault left by Seldon is due to automatically open. Started well but got a bit snarled up in the ‘found the 2nd Foundation game’. If humanity follows its current path, the Empire will fall and 30, years of turmoil will overcome humanity before a second Empire arises.

Logically, I grant that any such explanation had no chance of meeting my expectations and that Asimov, being as astute as he was, correctly decided not to provide revelations about the inner workings of the science.

It’s an incredible book, one that has several plot twists that you wont expect e you haven’t read the original trilogy and that is written in such a way that will make you keep reading more and more. It is also an illustration of what could eventually happen to any urbanized planet.

One criticism of the original trilogy that I have seen is the basic tenet of psychohistory, which has been criticized as not only impossible but unbelievable. No trivia or quizzes yet.
