Don’t get a shoulder injury before you even start to do reps. For each training session, you’re going to divide your training into two zones—A and B—using at least two exercises in each zone. It doesn’t really matter how much work you do in a set, it matters how much work you perform in a session and by extension, a number of sessions.
However, I knew that the strength increases could be enhanced by decreasing the rep range to two-four per set and by shifting the focus to total sets. Generally, most people will find it most effective to do higher repetition but not maximal effort sets and shorter rests at the beginning, and then gradually progress to less reps per set and longer rests as fatigue accumulates. You will see better results by only attempting reps you can finish completely, and properly. Choose two antagonistic exercises — such as a pull and a press movement.
